Important alert: Beware of fraudulent letters

We have received reports that some members of the public are being targeted with fraudulent letters claiming to be from the Department of Treasury and Finance (DTF) requesting payment for certain goods and services. Please be aware that DTF will never ask for payment through unsolicited letters, calls, emails, text messages or social media messages. These communications are fake and we urge you to disregard them and report them immediately. To protect yourself from this type of fraud, please follow these important guidelines:

  1. Verify the source: Always independently confirm the authenticity of any correspondence you receive from us. You can find our official contact details on the Contact us page. Do not make any payments to anyone without independent verification that the request is genuine.
  2. Protect your information: Do not share personal information (such as passwords or other sensitive or identifying information) or financial details (such as bank account details) with anyone who contacts you unsolicited.
  3. Report suspicious activity:
  • If you receive unsolicited communication from us that can’t be verified, report the incident on the SCAMWatch website.
  • Contact IDCARE for expert guidance on responding to data breaches, fraud, identity theft, and cyber security risks.

Please note that DTF will not be responsible for any losses resulting from such fraudulent communication.

For more information on scams – please refer to the Victorian Government website.

We appreciate your cooperation and vigilance.
